Summary: This textbook provides curriculum leaders and those preparing to become curriculum leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to exercise their leadership at several levels and in many roles. The first of the book's four sections explores the foundations of the field in chapters on the general concept of curriculum, the history of curriculum, types of curriculum theory, and the politics affecting curriculum decisions. The second section helps the reader acquire the skills to achieve curricular change. The chapters review the curriculum planning process and discuss improving and developing programs of study, fields of study, and courses and units of study. Section 3 concerns the management of the curriculum. This section's chapters suggest specific strategies for supervisory leadership, survey effective processes for implementing curricula, provide guidelines for aligning the various aspects of the curriculum, and review models for curriculum evaluation. The final section examines curricular trends in chapters on trends in subject fields, trends across the curriculum (including computer use), and current initiatives for individualizing the curriculum or adapting it to learners with special needs. Questions for review and references are included in each chapter, and names and subjects addressed in the book are indexed.
