Online resources: Abstract: The concept of governance has exploded in popularity. While some criticize it for imprecision, others regard its diffuseness as well suited to analysis of the ambiguous institutions and processes of the European Union. In this introductory article, we review some of the underlying controversies and survey the articles which comprise this special issue of the European Journal of Industrial Relations. These offer some hints for the future direction of the European polity at a time when its very foundations seem precarious.
