It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to review The Macroeconomics of HIV/AIDS edited by Markus Haacker. The book is organised as a collection of ten essays drawn from the experience of fourteen highly qualified authors. Each essay focuses on a separate topic and can be read as a stand-alone paper. Topics include the potential impacts of HIV/AIDS on demographics, economic growth, human capital accumulation, poverty and inequality, Botswana as a case study, public finances and public services with particular attention to national social protection schemes and the health sector, as well as the vexed issue of welfare in the context of the AIDS pandemic. Focus is primarily on the highly afflicted countries of Africa, particularly southern Africa.
