Summary: Economic work in the lives of the majority of woman in Zambia is not a matter of seeking equality with men. The changing economic roles and responsibility of women, particularly the poor, make working an economic necessity. Due to the economic pressures, family structures are no longer able to function as welfare systems to extend economic support to widowed, divorced and single women as dictated by tradition. many married women must also work.
