The Second World War plays a key part in shaping Poland's national identity. Relaxed censorship and improved economic conditions since the fall of communism are among a number of factors that have made it possible for Polish museums to take a closer look at how they present the war. At present, the interpretation of the Second World War in Polish museums is mainly characterised by (1) an active reversal of communist era interpretations and (2) a desire to move away from romantic martyrdom.
