In this introductory survey Peter Trudgill shows how class, race, sex, religion, environment and region are among the factors which father differences in and between langauges; and how, on the other hand, laguage may sometimes condition thought and so, indirectly, society. He naturally gives consiiderable space to the extraordinaryily wider variations in spoken English, but many other languages are considered in his exposition of the social and historical roots of grammar, accent and dialect, and of such phenomena as kinship terms, taboo words and multilingual socities.
