Summary, etc |
"Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in several medical conditions and contexts. They can take various forms including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and hypersomnolence. For various reasons, sleep disorders are commonly underdiagnosed and undertreated in patients with medical conditions. Sleep disorders have man negative consequences including impaired daytime functioning, psychological distress, decreased quality of life, and significant costs for society, improving the detection and management of sleep disorders in the context of a medical illness is therefore critical...[This work] reviews current knowledge on the nature and manifestations of sleep disorders associated with a variety of common medical conditions, including cancer, chronic pain, gastrointestinal disorders, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, and cardiovascular disease. Sleep disorders in specific contexts are also discussed (i.e., pediatric, hospitalization). The book also provides guidelines on how to assess and treat sleep disturbances with pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions in the context of specific medical conditions. This book is a must-read for primary care physicians, other first-line health care practitioners, and mental health car professionals who wish to address sleep difficulties." |
