Summary, etc This book covers Spanish History from the beginning of Charles V's reign through Phillip III's reign. The book concentrates mostly on Charles V and Phillip II. It was written about forty years ago and is the from the first revisionist books about Phillip II. Davies examines many of the famous rumors about Phillip and debunks them. Davies also was one of the first to examine Phillip's method of government. Geoffrey Parker's book on Phillip II is one of the latest books on Phillip II and his method of government. A lot of the revisionist ideas of Parker's are in this book, which for some reason he doesn't quote. It is a very clearly written book, and unlike Parker's book follows through all of Phillip's reign. The majority of the book is about the political events of the period. But, there is also a chapter on Spanish Culture during this period."--Review dated May 21, 2000 on Amazon.com viewed Feb. 19, 2021
