This paper was presented at the bi-annual meeting of the International Advisory Committee of Keepers of Public Collections of Graphic Art held at the Albertina, Vienna, 28 May–2 June 2012. The author would like to express his thanks to Dr Klaus-Albrecht Schröder, director of the Albertina, for his generous hospitality. The author would also like to thank the staff of the British Museum's Prints and Drawings Department for permitting him, in the 1970s, to while away Saturdays under their supervision at a time when letters of introduction and readers tickets were prerequisites to entry.
