The purpose of this paper is to investigate differences in the perceived performance and competitiveness of UK SMEs that are engaged in regular in comparison to sporadic activities in overseas markets. Findings from a postal survey and subsequent interviews establish that a number of differences exist between the two groups of firms and recommendations are proposed for policy makers when assisting managers in their internationalisation decisions.
